Q Can I find out more information on the house?
A Yes - please visit our house website at www.orlandopoolhome.net You will see that we named it after the Roseate Spoonbill....
Q Are there any trips that require overnight stays?
A No, that would defeat the point of creating day-itineraries based on our home.
Q When is the best birding time of year in central Florida?
A Greatest species variety is found at migration times (as you would expect), but winter is much more productive than summer.
Q How many species can I expect to see if I go on all ten day trips?
A That’s an impossible question to answer accurately, as any birder knows, but we’d generally expect somewhere in the region of 145-160, except in the summer months, when numbers would be lower.
Q Will I get any of the south Florida specialties like Spot-breasted Oriole, Smooth-Billed Ani or Flamingo?
A Very unlikely - none of the trips go further south than the northern fringes of Lake Okeechobee, so you would need to vary your itinerary to find birds like those above. However, if you want to make a short trip south, you can do so conveniently by staying in a motel for one night.
Q If I’m on a family vacation, with only some time devoted to birding, how close is the house to Disney World?
A We are 11-12 minutes’ drive from Disney’s Animal Kingdom, assuming normal traffic (and we can also tell you the back way to get there, so avoiding most of the congestion). The other Disney parks follow on from there.
Q No really, how easy is it to drop people off at the parks while I go birding?
A Well, the negotiation part is up to you, but the practical part is not difficult. You might not want to go all the way out to the far end of Tampa Bay, but most of the trips are an easy commute from the theme parks to good birding. (Then again, you could just go the parks and do some birding there because we’ve had all the tall waders - including Limpkin - Bald Eagle, Red-Bellied and Downy Woodpeckers, displaying Cooper’s Hawks, etc, all within Disney and Universal’s theme parks.)
